(MM) NEXT YEAR– COLLEGE STUDENTS WILL HAVE TO PAY EVEN MORE MONEY TO TAKE CLASSES… (KS) THE STATE SAYS IT NEEDS TO RAISE TUITION COSTS FOR IN-STATE AND OUT OF STATE STUDENTS. EYEWITNESS NEWS REPORTER JULIANNE PEIXOTO HAS THE NEW DETAILS. THE COMMISSIONER SAYS IT’S BEEN TWO YEARS SINCE THE STATE’S PUBLIC COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITY HAVE SEEN TUITION HIKES. HE SAYS — IT WAS TIME. COLLEGE STUDENTS AT RHODE ISLAND’S PUBLIC INSTITUTIONS MAY HAVE TO DIG A LITTLE DEEPER IN THEIR WALLETS NEXT YEAR. LAST WEDNESDAY — THE COUNCIL ON POSTSECONDARY EDUCATION UNANIMOUSLY APPROVED NEXT YEAR’S BUDGET — AND IN IT — TUITION HIKES. “What we tried to do is compromise, the institutions they asked for a little bit over 30 million, we got it down to about 30 million dollars, and that’s a mix of both state support increase and for tuition and fees.” THE PROPOSED BUDGET INCLUDES AN INCREASE OF 11 POINT 1 MILLION DOLLARS IN STATE AID. IT ALSO INCLUDES TUITION INCREASES. IN-STATE STUDENTS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF RHODE ISLAND WILL PAY 902 DOLLARS MORE PER YEAR — RHODE ISLAND COLLEGE STUDENTS WOULD SEE A TUITION INCREASE OF 574 DOLLARS PER YEAR– AND COMMUNITY COLLEGE OF RHODE ISLAND STUDENTS WOULD PAY 299 DOLLARS MORE PER YEAR. OUT OF STATE STUDENTS COULD EXPECT TO PAY INCREASES ABOUT DOUBLE THE IN STATE RATES. “There’s been a lot of increases in costs such as the health cost, uh salary benefits, those kind of things having to go up so it’s just the time.” THE COMMISSIONER SAYS EVEN WITH THE TUITION INCREASES — RHODE ISLAND INSTITUTIONS ARE STILL MORE AFFORDABLE THAN MANY OF THEIR NEW ENGLAND PEERS. COMPARE U-R-I’S NEARLY 13 THOUSAND DOLLAR TUITION RATE TO PENN STATE’S 17 AND A HALF THOUSAND — AND RIC’S 8 THOUSAND DOLLAR TUITION TO KEENE STATE’S 13 THOUSAND. The Board of Education will vote on the budget in their meeting this Wednesday. It will then move on to the governor for final approval.
